History and cinema
Let’s start with two museums that sum up the town’s history well. The first, the Citadel of Saint-Tropez Maritime History Museum, reminds us that Saint-Tropez was for a long time the third most important French port in the Mediterranean, opening onto the Levant and its wonders. Here you will find, housed in historic buildings, artifacts attesting to great sailing trips, the lives of sailors, port life then and now, and the port’s connections with North Africa and the Middle East. Bringing us back to the 20th century, the Gendarmerie and Cinema Museum looks at both the history of the police station in which it is housed and the history of movie making in Saint-Tropez.
Saint-Tropez and art
In addition to its many galleries, Saint-Tropez has a superb museum dedicated to art from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries, the Musée de l'Annonciade. What was at the time a small Provençal port charmed Paul Signac, who set up an atelier there and invited his artist friends, Cross, Matisse, Derain, Marquet and others. The Pointillist, Nabis and Fauve movements flourished there. On the walls of this delightful 16th century chapel, you will find work by these artists and more. Finally, discover the unusual Butterfly Museum. A passionate lepidopterist, the painter Dany Lartigue has created amazing canvases in which butterflies are inserted in a setting reminiscent of their biotope. Unique and fascinating.
